Some history on Jessie Darwyn Young and Armanda Pauline Robbins:
Darwyn, as he was called, spent his life as a farmer and dairyman. He farmed in
Itawamba County for several years. In 1949 he bought a farm in Lee County,
Mississippi where he moved and spent the remainder of his life. During the
depression of the 1930's Pauline went to work in a garment factory where she
worked for many years. In 1965, after making a very good crop, Darwyn and
Pauline retired from farming and purchased a lady's dress shop in partnership
with Pauline's sister in Tupelo, Mississippi. Later they became sole owners of
the dress shop. Later they sold the dress shop to their daughter Jean Young
Summers.
Darwyn Young, my maternal grandfather, in his later years shared some of
his early life history with me. His father, Joseph Fletcher Young, became
disabled with tuberculosis when my grandfather was around 12 years old. As my
grandfather told me he made his first crop at the age of 12. His father sawed
off the plow stocks so he could reach them and gave him advise and directions.
He also shared with me what his father told him shortly before he died. That
was, that as the oldest son he wanted him to take care of his younger siblings
and to take care of his mother. He also told me of the first time he ever met my
grandmother. They were at a church meeting or singing. He said he thought she
was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. She must have thought he look OK too.
She agreed to marry him on 1 November 1924. They were married at the home of
Delbert Gregory, Justice of the Peace, while still in their car. They were
married by the Justice of the Peace because all the Methodist preachers were at
Annual Conference.
Darwyn Young was a man of strong will and determination. He had a strong
work ethic and moral value which he taught his children and grandchildren. He
was also a strong disciplinarian with his children and grandchildren.
